Insecurity: 16 state governors back establishment of state police

Sixteen state governors have formally expressed their endorsement for the establishment of state police to the National Economic Council, as disclosed in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, the Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communications, on Thursday.

These reports were submitted during the 140th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, held at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. Nebeolisa Anako, the Secretary to NEC, presented an overview of the submissions made by states regarding the state police initiative.

Furthermore, the governors advocated for constitutional amendments to facilitate the implementation of state police systems. However, the statement did not specify which states provided the endorsements.

Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President’s spokesperson, assured that the comprehensive list would be presented at the upcoming NEC meeting, as the compilation process is ongoing.

It is worth noting that governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reaffirmed their stance on state policing on February 12, citing it as a vital solution to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges and expressing concerns about the country’s trajectory, likening it to that of Venezuela.

Additionally, various regional socio-political organizations such as Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum, and the Northern Elders’ Forum have consistently advocated for the establishment of state police as a crucial measure to address the nation’s diverse security issues.
