A furious crowd on Wednesday attacked a woman in her forties, known as Rabiatu, for purportedly stealing a packet of seasoning at Abaji main market in Abuja.
An eyewitness recounted that the incident occurred around 10:03 am when the woman, posing as a customer at an open shop within the market, allegedly concealed a packet of seasoning inside her hijab.
The witness further stated that a nearby vendor observed the woman picking up the seasoning packet and secreting it away.
“Actually, the woman earlier bought salt, sugar and Maggi but while the owner of the shop was busy attending to other customers, she picked another pack of Maggi and hid it not knowing that there was someone watching her,” the witness said.
He said the woman was about to leave the market when the alarm was raised by a neighbour, saying the woman denied picking the extra Maggi.
However, some women who were buying items at the shop were ordered to search the woman and in the process, the packet of Maggi was found hidden inside her hijab.
This incident attracted the attention of people, who tried to descend on her but were prevented by some vigilantes who arrived at the scene and led her out of the market.
