Modibbo Adama University in Yola and the Minister of Education, Professor Sale Mamman find themselves in disagreement over the expulsion of a 200-level student from the institution.
In 2023, the university’s management reportedly dismissed Salihu Usman, citing a discrepancy in the admission process. The university claimed that during a recent verification exercise, it was revealed that Usman had been mistakenly admitted with an NBAIS certificate.
Despite achieving a remarkable 4.47 GPA in the first semester of his 100-level and an impressive 4.8 CGPA in the second semester, Salihu was expelled following the submission of the screening committee’s report.
Investigations by LEADERSHIP Weekend, however, reveal that Salihu satisfied the university’s cut-off marks in line with JAMB’s provisions and was admitted based on merit. A former standout student of Atiku Abubakar Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Adamawa, Salihu excelled in both his NBAIS and JAMB exams at the college.
Recognizing his exceptional performance, the rector, Malam Kabiru Sa’ad, informed Malam Muhammadu Sani Jada, a key figure in the institution’s establishment. Jada, in turn, wrote to the NBAIS headquarters in Kaduna, highlighting Salihu’s academic excellence and addressing the challenges faced by NBAIS students in Nigerian universities.
Similar letters were also sent to the Minister of Education, Sale Mamman, and the National University Commission (NUC), outlining the difficulties NBAIS students encounter in the hands of Nigerian universities.
