The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated the sale of confiscated food items to support vulnerable Nigerians in addressing hunger nationwide, as disclosed by Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Service.
Adeniyi made this announcement on Tuesday during the sectoral debate series in the House of Representatives, where the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, was also present.
Adeniyi further revealed that President Bola Tinubu has given directives to sell domestically produced food items seized at Nigerian land borders directly to vulnerable citizens, aiming to alleviate the challenge of hunger in the country.
He said, “Mr President has directed that we sell directly to needy Nigerians food items produced locally but which were seized. This is one of the ways to address hunger and food scarcity we are facing. We have started this in Lagos.
“Also, the President has also directed that imported food items seized by the Nigeria Customs Service should be sold back to the local markets for resale to Nigerians”
