Ekiti Govt issues advisory as NIMET predicts thunderstorms

The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has advised residents to stay calm and take necessary precautions in response to forecasts of thunderstorms in certain parts of the state by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe-Aluko, and released to the press in Ado Ekiti, Erelu Ajisafe-Aluko acknowledged the natural occurrence of thunderstorms and highlighted the potential dangers associated with them.

Residents were encouraged to remain calm and adopt necessary precautions to minimize potential risks linked to the phenomenon. The Ministry recommended precautionary measures, including seeking shelter indoors, maintaining distance from windows and reflective surfaces, avoiding open flames and gas during thunderstorms, and adopting a safe posture while refraining from using mobile phones as metal can attract lightning.

In addition, the Ministry cautioned residents to reduce electrical hazards by turning off and unplugging electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges. Furthermore, residents were advised to keep a safe distance from electric wires, poles, and other conductors.

The statement assured residents that faithfully adhering to these precautionary measures would significantly reduce the likelihood of casualties resulting from the natural occurrence this year.
