The Ekiti State Council of Elders has expressed strong disapproval of the calls for a government takeover in response to the country’s prolonged security and economic challenges. Additionally, the council has urged President Bola Tinubu to promptly address the economic difficulties that are rendering life increasingly challenging for many Nigerians.
During an emergency meeting in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, the senior citizens commended President Tinubu for adopting the 2012 Oronsaye Report. They urged him not to delay in addressing other critical national issues, including the establishment of State Police and broader restructuring matters. The council, represented by its President, Prof Joseph Oluwasanmi, and General Secretary, Elder Niyi Ajibulu, cautioned against careless remarks that could potentially lead to anarchy and setback for the country.
The paper reads, “The Elders condemn in very strong terms the unguarded utterances of some Nigerians which are not only undermining the revered office of the President but also inciting and a subtle call for an illegal change of government.
“The council appeals to the Yoruba to be wary of the antics of some ethnic bigots whose hidden agenda is to subvert and discredit the Yoruba as they never do well in governance so as to get through the back door what they failed to achieve through the ballots.
“The body cautions any monarch or prominent figures who by their actions or utterances are unpatriotic or suggesting a “military takeover”, warning that genuinely patriotic Yoruba and Nigerians will resist any attempt to destabilize the nation.”
Expressing concern about the challenging economic conditions faced by Nigerians, the council acknowledged the populace’s expectations for relief under the current administration.
Despite the prevailing difficulties, the council appealed for patience from Nigerians, emphasizing the need to allow the government time to address the accumulated problems affecting the nation’s economy and security.
