The Senate on Wednesday, affirmed that President Bola Tinubu possesses the authority, as provided by the Nigeria Labour Law, to dismiss any Chief Executive Officer of government agencies, including Barrister Irukera of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
This resolution by the upper legislative chamber came following a motion put forward by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, which highlighted the alleged violations of the provisions of the FCCPC.
Senator Opeyemi, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District and serving as the Leader of the 10th Senate, urged the Senate to investigate the removal of the Chief Executive and Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC with the aim of reinstating him.
“That the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the removal of the CEO of FCCPC.”
After contributions by some lawmakers on the motion, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio in his remarks, said, the President has power under the Nigeria Labour Law to hire and fire.
“Appointments of public officers are done under the Labour Law and you cannot force a willing servant on an unwilling master.”
The motion was thrown out following its rejection through voice votes.
