A driver in Adamawa State, David Donald, has been placed in custody at a correctional centre in the capital, Yola, for allegedly consuming significant quantities of a local beer known as burukutu and failing to pay for it. The defendant is also accused of adding two plates of fish pepper soup to his unpaid bills.
Charged with cheating, David appeared before an Upper Area Court 4 in Yola, where he pleaded guilty to the offence, contrary to Section 302 of the Penal Code Law. The presiding judge, Ibrahim Musa, issued the remand order.
Hailing from Karin Lamido in Taraba State, David was arraigned by the Adamawa State Police Command. According to the police, on February 21, 2024, at a local joint in Yola, he ordered five plastic buckets of burukutu and two plates of fish pepper soup. After consuming the items without payment, he attempted to escape but was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Sergeant Kabiru Abubakar, the prosecuting police officer, informed the court that the defendant dishonestly obtained beer and pepper soup with a total value of N6,600 from Felicity Sunday and Linda Ali. The complainants reported the matter to the police, alleging that the defendant had refused to settle the bills.
