The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced that it successfully obtained convictions and imposed various jail sentences on six individuals, including two undergraduates from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), for their participation in internet fraud.
According to a statement released by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Monday, the undergraduates, Gbolahan Khalid Adesina and Perekebena Olombeni Micah, faced separate charges before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Osogbo. Simultaneously, the remaining four, Sholagbade Taofeek Olanrewaju, Qudus Olohunnoyin Baba, Akinpelu Quadri Opeyemi, and John Oluwafimihan Adeyemo, were arraigned before Justices O.A. Adetujoye and S.O. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.
Oyewale stated that the convicts engaged in impersonation of foreigners, using false identities to defraud their victims. All six were found guilty and received varying jail terms.
Justice Ayo-Emmanuel sentenced Adesina and Micah to one year in prison each without the option of a fine, while Olanrewaju, Baba, Opeyemi, and Adeyemo were assigned two weeks of community service each.
The court mandated the convicts to make restitution to their respective victims and forfeit all recovered items to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Oyewale mentioned that the convictions stemmed from the arrests made by EFCC operatives in connection with internet-related offenses.
