Why Moses lost place in Eagles starting list

In a notable change within coach Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles squad during the 2023 AFCON, Moses Simon, initially a starter, now finds himself on the substitute bench as the team strives to advance to the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Insider information obtained by SCORENigeria reveals that Simon’s demotion from the starting XI is linked to his steadfast assertion that he is a left winger, not a right winger.

While playing for his Ligue 1 club, FC Nantes, Simon is officially listed as a left winger. This position was also the one he occupied during the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, where he garnered acclaim as one of the standout performers for the national team.

Coach Peseiro’s preference for Ademola Lookman over Moses Simon stems from the former’s ability as a left winger. Lookman has lived up to the coach’s expectations with strong performances against Equatorial Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire.

Peseiro aims to deploy Lookman on the left wing, and to accommodate this tactical choice, he envisions Moses Simon playing on the right wing. Peseiro values Simon’s defensive contributions and work rate, which are crucial for the team’s overall performance.

However, Moses Simon insists that his optimal position is as a left winger, creating a positional dilemma within the team.
