Labourer bags two months jail for stealing phone

In a Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday, a 19-year-old labourer named Garba Abdulmuminu was sentenced to two months in prison for the theft of a phone valued at N20,000. Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos handed down the summary sentence after Abdulmuminu pleaded guilty to the offense.

However, Bokkos provided an option for the convict to pay a N10,000 fine or face one month in prison. Additionally, the magistrate ordered Abdulmuminu to compensate the complainant with N20,000 or serve an additional one month in prison if he defaults on the payment.

The magistrate emphasized that this punishment aims to deter potential offenders. Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the case was reported on December 7, 2023, at the Angwan Rogo Police Station in Jos by the complainant, Idris Abdulmuminu.

The prosecutor stated that the convict, in collaboration with an accomplice who is at large, stole the phone valued at N20,000. The offense is punishable under the Plateau Penal Code Law.
