Cosmas Ugwu, a policeman stationed at the Imo State Police Command, met a tragic end when he was fatally shot by his 23-year-old girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo, hailing from Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. The unfortunate incident took place on Boxing Day around 6:30 pm at the Ezinihitte Area Command.
Reports indicate that officers on duty heard three gunshots emanating from the room where Ugwu was present. Rushing to investigate, they discovered Corporal Ugwu lying in a pool of blood, having been shot three times in the chest and left hand by his girlfriend.
The altercation between the deceased and his girlfriend escalated to a serious extent, culminating in the girlfriend seizing his rifle and firing multiple shots, resulting in Ugwu’s tragic demise. Despite immediate efforts to save him by rushing him to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, he was pronounced dead by the attending physician.
The devastating event unveils a harrowing confrontation that ended in an irreparable loss.
The source added, “Nobody actually knows what went wrong between the two, but how the girl was able to use a police rifle successfully is still a surprise to many. Maybe, Ugwu was the one who taught her.”
It was reported that the remains of the slain officer had been deposited at the Obizi mortuary, while further investigation continues.
The suspect is currently in police custody for interrogation and possible prosecution.
When contacted by our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident exclusively to PUNCH Metro, saying the police were doing everything to ascertain what transpired.
“Yes, the incident happened. A policeman was allegedly shot dead by his girlfriend. He was serving at Ezinihitte Mbaise. Currently, the girl involved has been arrested. We are doing everything to ensure we investigate the matter, to ascertain the fact and possibly arraign the suspect in court,” Okoye stated in a telephone conversation.
