Southampton manager Russel Martin has confirmed that the club will not prevent Joe Aribo from joining the Nigerian squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The midfielder, who has been showcasing a revitalized performance at the club, is anticipated to secure a spot in Nigeria’s final roster for the 2023 AFCON tournament.
Preparations for the Super Eagles are set to commence in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, starting January 1.
Aribo’s potential participation in the AFCON could see him away for approximately a month should the Super Eagles progress to the tournament’s final stage.
Martin emphasized the significance of allowing Aribo and other African players within his team to honor their national team commitments.
“We can’t stop anyone. You want them to go there fit and come back fit. Joe needs to keep playing, now he has been playing and I’m sure he will get into their squad,” Martin told Daily Echo.
“He has been a mainstay in their squad for quite a while. They go with everyone’s best wishes, as you want them to do well.”
Cote d’Ivoire will host the 2023 AFCON from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
