Crochet-a-thon: Nigerian lady kicks off knitting of wedding gown for 72-hours in Lagos

Nigerian crochet artist and social entrepreneur, Okafor Chidinma Modupe, has initiated her 72-hour crochet-a-thon aiming to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR). The event commenced at around 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 24, at GOGE Africa, Maryland Lagos, and will persist until December 27.

Crochet, a needlework craft involving looping thread with a hooked needle, entails creating various stitches with varying numbers of loops on the hook. For this particular challenge, the 30-year-old crochet enthusiast intends to craft a wedding gown.

Expressing her excitement over this potentially record-breaking endeavor, Chidinma conveyed to The Nation that she had diligently prepared for this opportunity, considering it a fulfillment of her lifelong dream.

The current record-holder for the longest marathon crocheting is Alessandra Hayden of Gig Harbor, Washington, USA, who accomplished an astonishing 34 hours and 7 minutes in November 2023. Hayden knitted a blanket during her attempt, which she subsequently donated to her daughter’s school auction. A friend purchased the blanket for $2,000 and gifted it back to Hayden.

Inspired by the world record set by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci for the longest cooking marathon, many Nigerian youths have been striving to establish or break world records in diverse fields.

Chidinma acknowledged the unwavering support and encouragement of her family throughout her pursuit of this record. She shared that she started crocheting at a young age, initially as a hobby, which later evolved into a profound passion for crafting various accessories and garments.
