President Ibrahim Gusau of the Nigeria Football Federation has pledged the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system within the Nigeria Football League.
VAR serves as a tool to aid referees in making more accurate decisions regarding player fouls, the validity of goals, red card assessments, and other critical judgments during football matches.
Gusau assured this development during the inaugural retreat of the NPFL’s management and staff held in Abuja.
He outlined plans for the NFF to initiate the integration of VAR into Nigerian football by sending selected referees to countries where VAR is already operational. This move aims to facilitate the study of VAR’s application and usage in football.
“I can assure you that VAR will be effectively put into use in our domestic football before the end of my first tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2026. It will be gradual, but we will surely get there,” Gusau stated.
