Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, urged an end to discrimination against children with disabilities in public schools nationwide.
Speaking at the 2023 International Day for Persons With Disability event in Abuja, Sununu, represented by Dr. Clarence Ujam from the Ministry of Education, emphasized the pressing need to address the rejection of children with disabilities in public schools.
He highlighted the lack of facilities and caregivers as reasons behind this issue, urging all stakeholders to collaborate and put an end to this trend.
“Findings revealed that children with disabilities are rejected from public schools because of a lack of facilities and caregivers. This discrimination must stop by the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders,” he said.
Sununu expressed dismay over the denial of various rights, including educational opportunities, faced by children with disabilities. He highlighted the prevalence of negative perceptions associated with them.
Advocating for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal number 4, which advocates for inclusivity and the creation of opportunities for individuals with disabilities, he stressed the importance of providing equal educational and societal opportunities for all.
