The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Oron Local Council Area faced a closure on Wednesday following a distressing incident involving the abduction of Justice Joy Unwana and the tragic murder of her police orderly, Inspector ThankGod Edet, by unidentified gunmen.
Reports revealed that Justice Unwana, along with her driver, Idorenyin Moses, was abducted on Monday at approximately 8 pm while commuting home from the court along the Okobo-Esuk Inwang-Ndon Ebom Road.
As of now, the abductors have not made any contact with the family or associates of the kidnapped judge. In response to this appalling event, the Oron branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) held a press conference outside the court premises.
Addressing the media, NBA chairman Torosco Eyene expressed deep concern about the abduction, especially considering the judge’s recent significant rulings in favor of abandoned children during a prolonged family court session.
Members of the NBA showcased placards denouncing the compromised security situation in Oron and urgently demanding improved safety measures. They vehemently condemned the abduction of Justice Unwana and the tragic loss of her police escort.
The NBA called upon the Akwa Ibom State government and security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and ensure the prompt release of the judge and her driver.
Additionally, they urged the state authorities to address the security challenges on the Okobo Esuk Inwang-Ndon Ebom Road, known for its vulnerability to criminal activities due to its layout and inadequate lighting.
