Appeal court affirms Tambuwal, Wamakko senatorial election

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal upheld the election victories of two former Sokoto State governors, Aminu Tambuwal and Aliyu Wamakko, as Senators representing Sokoto South and Sokoto North respectively.

Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faced a challenge from Ibrahim Danbaba, the former senator of the district, while Aliyu Wamakko was challenged by Manir Dan’iya, the former deputy governor of the state.

In two distinct judgments delivered by a panel of three judges led by Justice Mustapha Muhammad, Ibrahim Danbaba’s petition against Tambuwal was dismissed, and a fine of N500,000 was awarded in favor of the defendants and their political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

One of the lead counsels representing the defendants and the PDP, Suleiman Usman, confirmed that while Tambuwal’s election was upheld, the petitions brought by his former deputy against Wamakko were also dismissed.

Usman said, “The court just gave their judgment in respect to the two Senatorial elections in the state.

“While the election of Senator Tambuwal was affirmed by the court, the three-man justices in their wisdom also awarded a fine of N500,000 against the petitioner in favour of the defendant and the PDP.

“Meanwhile, the court also in his wisdom dismissed our petitions filed on behalf of the former deputy governor, Manir Dan’iya against the former governor and Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko.

“The court also awarded a fine which I cannot immediately recall against our client in favour of the defendant in this case.
