NIS warns students, traders against irregular migration

The Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS) organized a rally to caution secondary school and university students, as well as traders, about the dangers of irregular migration and smuggling of migrants.

Mrs. Caroline Adepoju, the Comptroller General of Immigration, delivered a warning to students and traders during the Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Week rally in Abuja.

Represented by Chief Superintendent of Immigration (CSI) Mr. Innocent Olowu, Adepoju advised against being misled by individuals enticing them to travel abroad through irregular routes.

He said the focus of these rallies in secondary schools, universities, and markets aimed to reach those particularly vulnerable to such temptations. Adepoju highlighted the rationale behind extending the message of anti-smuggling of migrants to schools, citing the tragic loss of many youths while attempting to cross the Sahara desert and Mediterranean Sea.

“We are losing lives and the numbers are outrageous and because of this, we thought of a preventive measure by creating awareness of the dangers of irregular migrations.

“The one at schools was directed at the students themselves who will understand what we are talking about, and will also talk to their parents about what they were told.”
