Nigerian Female Soldier Clinches Gold at World Military Wrestling Championship

In a historic achievement for the Nigerian military, Corporal Hannah Reuben of the Nigerian Army secured a gold medal in the women’s 76kg category at the ongoing 36th World Military Wrestling Championship in Azerbaijan. The victory marked a significant milestone for the Armed Forces of Nigeria wrestling team on the global stage.

Competing in the women’s freestyle wrestling event, Corporal Hannah Reuben demonstrated her prowess by defeating her Italian opponent in the 68kg weight category to claim the gold medal. This remarkable feat not only brought honor to the Nigerian Army but also showcased the country’s strength and skill in military wrestling.

Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, highlighted the historic nature of the achievement, emphasizing that it is the first time the Armed Forces of Nigeria has secured a gold medal since participating in the CISM World Wrestling Championship. Lance Corporal Ojolaide Esther also contributed to the team’s success by earning a silver medal in the 72kg weight category.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, expressed his delight over the victory, with Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Onumajuru and Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis representing him at the scene. They attributed the success to the unwavering support of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, acknowledging his pivotal role in the team’s accomplishments.

In a video shared on the Nigerian Army’s official account, Corporal Hannah Reuben could be seen jubilantly celebrating her triumph with the country’s flag draped around her shoulders. In expressing her gratitude, she thanked Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, and other service chiefs for ensuring that Nigerian military wrestlers participated in the prestigious championship.
