Anthony Gordon scored the only goal as a dominant Newcastle United beat Manchester United at St James’ Park.
Kieran Trippier’s ball across the six-yard box was pounced upon by Gordon, who swept in at the back post.
Eddie Howe’s side controlled proceedings in the first half, with Andre Onana having to be alert to deny Miguel Almiron. The visitors’ goalkeeper was then helpless as Trippier’s brilliant free-kick smashed against the bar.
However, the evening ended on a sour note for Newcastle as goalkeeper Nick Pope was withdrawn with six minutes remaining after injuring his shoulder.
