US military plane with eight crew crashes off Japan coast

A United States Osprey military aircraft, carrying eight crew members, crashed on Wednesday off the coast of Japan, as reported by the coastguard.

“We received information at 2:47 pm (0547 GMT) today that the US military’s Osprey crashed off Yakushima Island,” a spokeswoman told a news agency.

“We were also notified that eight crew members were on board,” she added.

“There is no further information at the moment.”

However, there have been no reported casualties from the incident.

Yakushima, situated south of Japan’s southernmost main island, Kyushu, was the location of the crash.

According to Japanese broadcaster NHK, the Osprey took off from the Iwakuni US base in the Yamaguchi region, en route to the Kadena base in Okinawa.

NHK referenced defense ministry sources confirming the aircraft as a CV-22 Osprey from Tokyo’s US Yokota air base.

The tilt-rotor Osprey has faced challenges historically, with a series of fatal crashes over time.

Just four months ago, a plane crash in northern Australia resulted in the loss of three US Marines among the 23 individuals onboard.
