Abia govt stops unverified workers’ salaries

The Abia State government announced that civil servants who missed the verification process won’t receive salaries starting November 2023. Okey Kanu, the commissioner for information and culture, relayed this during a press briefing in Umuahia after Governor Alex Otti chaired the executive council meeting.

Kanu emphasized that the State government provided a two-week extension for civil servants to complete verification, underscoring its necessity for salary disbursement.

For those unable to undergo verification, Kanu directed them to contact their Ministries, Departments, and Agency heads to address their situation.

Additionally, the commissioner mentioned the potential reopening of 197 closed private schools in the State, pending their adherence to government guidelines and standards.

He highlighted the subpar conditions and teaching staff in these schools.

Furthermore, the State government plans to unveil a whistle-blower policy soon. Betty Emeka-Obasi, the Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties to the Governor, urged unverified workers to approach their respective MDAs, where their names are listed.
