The Kano State Government has revealed that 3,234 individuals were unlawfully drawing salaries from the state’s public service. Among them were a 13-year-old girl, students from primary and secondary schools, and even members of the National Youth Service Corps. These ineligible individuals were reportedly recruited during the tenure of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, shared these findings while addressing the press regarding the committee’s report commissioned by the state government to investigate these irregular recruitments.
Governor Abba Yusuf had previously instructed the immediate suspension of salaries for over 10,000 public servants who were employed towards the conclusion of the former governor’s tenure.
Dr. Bichi highlighted that despite the hurried recruitment process, the prior administration failed to account for the financial implications of the 2023 appropriation.
“It is sad to discover that the majority of those recruited did not go through the former screening exercise, while some got the job with fake certificates,” he said.
He revealed that part of the recommendations sanctioned by the government includes offering 9,332 with relevant qualifications and employment opportunities into the service.
He said appropriate sanctions would be meted out, especially to those civil servants who carried out the action in line with civil service rules.
“Those that will be sanctioned include the mother of the 13-year-old girl who confirmed to the committee that she has been receiving salaries through her mother’s account and who is a worker in the public service,” Bichi added.
