Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has urged for the swift removal of sanctions imposed on Niger Republic by the European Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Following reports of a military takeover led by former Presidential Guard Commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023, both ECOWAS and the EU imposed sanctions on the West African nation.
However, Sani contends that these sanctions seem to be exacerbating hardships and creating further difficulties for the impoverished populace.
“The ECOWAS and EU sanctions imposed on Niger Republic is affecting the capacity and capabilities of the country to fight terrorism.” Sani, who served in the 8th Senate, wrote on X.
“We are witnessing the escalation of terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s bordering states.
“These sanctions must be lifted in the interest of the collective security of the West African region.”
