Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi asserted that the November 11 election in the state was won by the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to its presentation of a popular candidate, rather than being influenced by tribal or ethnic sentiments.
Mr Bello made this statement during an APC stakeholders’ meeting held at the Glasshouse of the Government House, Lokoja on Saturday.
He emphasized that Kogi must develop as one united state and no tribe should think it could secure victory without support from other tribes.
He added that he had cautioned against tribal sentiments before his own successful election campaign in 2019 and hoped for a sweet victory for APC, which is why he urged caution against such sentiments.
Mr Bello applauded President Bola Tinubu’s contributions toward securing a “clean and clear”victory for APC in the off-cycle election. Despite facing several obstacles throughout their seven-year journey, they emerged stronger with transparency as their watchword.
The governor expressed regret over people allowing emotions and personal interests to cloud their reasoning during elections instead of focusing on good governance initiatives such as road construction, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
