Senator Advocates for an End to Food Insecurity

Dr. Lere Oyewumi, Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, has urged the implementation of a deliberate strategy to address the nation’s food production challenges.

Speaking at an empowerment program in Ikire, he distributed 500 bags of fertilizer, 120 motorcycles, and a grant of N25 million to women and youths in Osun West Senatorial District.

Oyewumi emphasized that the initiative aims to meet the identified pressing needs of the constituents, facilitating improved agricultural yield and better accessibility to remote farming locations.

The lawmaker representing Osun West in the Senate further said, “One of the major challenges facing the country now is food insecurity and there must be a deliberate plan to reverse the trend.

“Fertiliser is one of the basic ingredients that our farmers need nowadays to assist them on their farms. This is just a starting point. You know there is a ban on the importation of fertilisers. It is not readily available, if not, we would have gotten more than this.

“We are going to have far more than this in the next planting season. We will have at least a thousand bags of fertilisers to assist our farmers in the rural areas to have an improved yield on their farms.

“This is going to be a yearly programme because I promised them when I was contesting. It is not limited to fertilisers alone, it includes the sprayer, chemicals and improved seedlings.”
