The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s leadership has firmly rejected the Court of Appeal’s decision to remove Governor Kabir Yusuf from his position as Kano State governor, expressing profound dismay at what they deem a grave miscarriage of justice.
Acting National Chairman Abba Ali, addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday, denounced the judgment regarding their party’s sole elected governorship position. He expressed shock at the outcome delivered on November 17, 2023, regarding the Kano State governorship election petition.
Ali highlighted the apparent political desperation of APC leaders in Kano State, emphasizing their rejection at the polls and subsequent attempts to seize power through legal channels, akin to their actions in 2019.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld the tribunal’s ruling, affirming the APC candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, as the victor in the governorship election, a decision that has sparked controversy.
Ali reminded that Governor Yusuf was elected with a significant mandate of 1,019,602 votes. He also noted the gracious concession made by the APC candidate following his defeat.
The NNPP chairman declared the party’s intent to appeal the judgment at the Supreme Court, affirming that legal counsel has been engaged for this purpose.
He said, “We called on all well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the Kano situation as it is increasingly becoming the test case for the survival of democracy in Nigeria and the credibility of the judicial system.
“We are therefore calling on the ruling party to save democracy in Nigeria by halting their clandestine moves to annihilate all other political parties and drag the country into a one-party system.
“We are calling on the international community to support our country to deepen multi-party democracy and stop the APC from turning the country into a one–partystate.”
