The House of Representatives has suspended its plenary session due to the industrial strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress on Tuesday.
This move aims to provide an opportunity for the leadership of the federal legislature to take prompt actions in resolving the persistent issues between organized labor and the government led by President Bola Tinubu.
The decision to adjourn followed the consideration and approval of a motion on “Matters of urgent public importance” presented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, on Wednesday.
Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State under the All Progressives Congress, led the debate, urging the bicameral legislature’s leadership to engage with organized labor for a mutually beneficial resolution in the national interest.
During the plenary, lawmakers expressed concern about the widespread hardship endured by Nigerians since the commencement of the industrial action, emphasizing the need for swift resolution of the dispute.
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, in his ruling before the adjournment, assured Nigerians that the House leadership would promptly meet with its counterparts to address and resolve the issue.
Consequently, all scheduled items on the Order Paper, including the consideration of bills and motions, were suspended, and the House adjourned until Thursday.
