On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) directed their affiliates to cease their services nationwide from midnight on November 14, 2023.
TUC President Festus Osifo made this announcement while addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday. Osifo emphasized that the strike would persist until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.”
The strike serves as a protest against the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other executives of the congress in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as addressing the ongoing labor issues in Imo State.
Ajaero was reportedly arrested by the police ahead of a state-wide protest in Imo, as stated by the NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah.
Despite the police’s denial of Ajaero’s arrest, asserting that he was taken into protective custody to prevent a mob attack, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused the labor leader of interfering in the political affairs of the state.
