Labour’s Athan Achonu demands cancellation of Imo guber election over widespread rigging

Athan Achonu, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for governor of Imo State, has demanded the cancellation of the results of some polling units due to alleged anomalies. Mr. Achonu made this demand in his hometown of Umulumo, in the Ehime Mbano Council District. He stated that party officials had brought back reports of vote-buying and ballot box snatching, and other illegal activities during the election process.

According to Mr. Achonu, the LP has already submitted a written request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) asking for the cancellation of the results from the affected areas. He also urged INEC to take appropriate measures to ensure that the election results are not falsified.

“In parts of Ideato, the process was characterized by ballot box snatching and all manners of irregularities, including voter intimidation,” he said. “This is unacceptable. We have already written to INEC to take appropriate steps to ensure that fake results are not uploaded.“

Mr. Achonu also lamented the absence of security personnel in certain locations around Orlu and Orsu, while commending the military for their efforts to maintain peace in some other areas.

However, INEC’s Head of Voter Education, Emmanuella Opara, stated that the commission has not yet received an official report on the alleged irregularities.
