Insecurity: Kwara moves to register scavengers

The Kwara State Government has announced its intention to oversee and regulate the activities of scavengers within the state.

This regulatory measure aims to enhance the safety of residents’ lives and property while also contributing to an increase in revenue.

The Commissioner for Environment, Shehu Ndanusa, shared this information during a meeting with the Association of Scavengers held at the Ministry of Environment in Ilorin on Saturday.

“The present administration under the leadership of Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is not comfortable with your operations as it is causing insecurity in the state.

“Therefore, this ministry deem it fit to regulate your activities, through an official registration for efficient operation across the state,” Ndanusa explained.

The commissioner announced the commencement of the registration process for scavenger industries, aiming for formal recognition. Individuals within this sector will be assigned identity codes and provided with uniform attire for easy identification.

A stern warning was issued to scavengers, urging them to refrain from engaging in criminal activities, adhere to environmental laws, or face legal consequences.

Expressing gratitude, Musa Umah, the state chairman of the scavengers, commended Governor AbdulRazaq for his people-oriented programs, leadership qualities, and the conducive environment created for scavengers.

Umah pledged their commitment to operate within the legal framework governing their business and expressed readiness to collaborate with the government in maintaining a healthy living environment in the state.

Hajia Afusat Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, extended appreciation to representatives from the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, and the Association of Scavengers for their presence at the meeting.

She conveyed that the registration deadline for scavengers is set for December 31, with full enforcement scheduled to commence in January 2024.
