Mass protest rocks Plateau over Appeal Court judgments

Plateau state has been engulfed in tension as disgruntled PDP youths conducted a mass protest on Wednesday, November 8. They expressed their discontent with the Appeal Court Judgments that invalidated the elections of PDP candidates.

This peaceful protest took place at Mararaban Jama’a roundabout, All Airport junction, and the secretariat junction. There, numerous youths gathered to denounce the conflicting decisions of the Appellate Court.

In response to the protest, a combined security force consisting of the Police and Army was deployed to strategic locations to monitor the situation and prevent potential incidents.

During the demonstration, a clash occurred between the security personnel, primarily the Army, and the protesting youths as they attempted to disperse the crowd, resulting in several injuries.

Our reporter noted that the protest caused significant traffic disruptions, leading shopkeepers to hastily close their businesses, and pedestrians sought refuge.

John Mark, the PDP youth leader, conveyed in an interview at the protest site that they felt compelled to engage in this peaceful protest due to the court rulings not aligning with the people’s mandate.

He said: “The people gave their mandate but the judges are just dishing out judgment against the party, and that is what were protesting for in which we want the whole world to know of the injustices meted against the party.

As of the time of compiling this report, the situation has been effectively managed, and people are resuming their regular daily activities.

In contrast, exuberant celebrations also erupted at Mararaban Jama’a roundabout and All Airport Junction in Jos as numerous APC supporters welcomed the Appeal Court’s verdicts, which nullified the elections of PDP National Assembly members.

The appeal judges, in their respective rulings, invalidated the elections of Beni Lar, who represents Langtang North/South, Musa Bagos, representing Jos South/East, Peter Gyengdeng, representing Riyom/Barkin Ladi, and Senator Napoleon Bali, who represents Plateau South.
