Canadian embassy suspends operations in Nigeria, warns against non-essential travels

The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria has temporarily suspended its operations, likely in response to a fire incident that occurred at the commission on Monday.

The suspension means that visa and immigration services are temporarily unavailable for individuals wishing to visit or immigrate to Canada. Additionally, services for Canadians in Nigeria and in Equatorial Guinea, as well as Sao Tome and Principe, will not be provided until further notice.

The government of Canada has also issued a travel advisory warning its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Nigeria due to security concerns, including terrorism, crime, armed attacks, and kidnappings.

The announcement was made via the High Commission’s official social media account, and the government of Canada’s travel advisory was updated on November 6, 2023. When contacted for further information, an official from the Canadian High Commission did not respond to inquiries.
