ASUU donates rice, others to Sokoto IDP camp

In an endeavor to support the welfare of the underprivileged in society, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State chapter, generously provided food assistance to 250 internally displaced persons in Sokoto on Tuesday.

During the presentation of the items, which included rice, beans, vegetable oil, salt, seasoning, and water, the chairman, Prof Nurudeen Almustapha, highlighted that this act of kindness was part of ASUU’s commitment to aiding those less fortunate in society.

He said, “This is part of the programmes initiated by our union to help the needy; this time  it is for North West and North Central. we are done with North Central while we started that of North Weest in Katsina.

“We have done it in Zamfara and Kebbi states, and now in Sokoto today as part of the North West, where we are flagging off the distribution to give 250 members, all women of the IDPs.

“The union earmarked N50m for this exercise in the North Central and North West. Other zones have received theirs.

“The union is looking at it as part of our cooperate responsibilities to help the needy. That is why we tax ourselves a minimum of N2,000  for six months which we gathered together in order to do this.”

The chairman also took the opportunity to appeal to government authorities at all levels to provide sufficient security measures, enabling residents of IDP camps across the nation to return to their homes.

He emphasized that ASUU has been offering advice to the Federal Government on addressing the issue of insecurity in the country, with the ultimate goal of facilitating the return of those living in the camps to their homes.

In his earlier remarks, Nasiru Kalambina, the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on State Emergency Management Authority, reassured stakeholders that the current administration is making every effort to expedite the return of those in the camp to their homes. He also mentioned that the state government, through SEMA, will soon provide relief support to the individuals residing in the IDP camp.

Several beneficiaries who shared their thoughts with our correspondent praised ASUU for their benevolent gesture and called upon other groups and individuals in society to extend their hand of friendship to those living in the camp.
