Over the past eight months, the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre has provided training to a total of 1,892 individuals, with the aim of addressing the issue of school attacks in Nigeria.

The training encompassed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, private security company operatives, and members of various neighborhood watch groups. This information was conveyed in a statement issued by NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, on Wednesday.

“In a bid to address the menace of attack on schools in Nigeria, no fewer than 1,892 persons comprising personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, operatives of private security companies and members of different neighbourhood watch groups have so far been trained by the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre since its inauguration eight months ago, with at least 48 attacks on schools thwarted,” the statement read in part.

The Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, spoke in anticipation of the inaugural national summit titled ‘Tackling Identified Threats in the Nigerian Safe Schools Project,’ scheduled for November 2, 2023. He also highlighted that the NSSRCC has received support from certain state governments during this time.

The head of NSCDC urged other stakeholders to lend their support to the Safe Schools implementation initiative, emphasizing the necessity for a collective commitment to eliminate the problem of school attacks.

He expressed confidence that the summit would address the recognized threats and security aspects in the execution of safe schools, promote collaboration among all relevant parties, and streamline working procedures in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure.
