Reps summon Naira Marley, Mohbad’s legal team over late singer’s royalties

The House of Representatives has summoned musician Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, for royalties owed to his late former signee Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

A House panel comprised of committees on youth, justice, and legislative compliance also welcomed Mohbad’s legal team.

Yusuf Ibrahim, the panel’s clerk, indicated the House’s determination to probe Mohbad’s royalties when he was signed under Naira Marley’s Marlian Records in a letter on Thursday.

Naira Marley and Mohbad’s legal team were officially called to a meeting on October 31st, according to the letter.

“The House Committees on Justice, Youth and Legislative Compliance invite you and the legal team of MOHBAD for an interactive meeting session as regards a referral received being a resolution of the House of Representatives during their plenary session on Tuesday 26th September 2023 with respect to the circumstances surrounding the royalties and other benefits of Mohbad and to ascertain the level of your interaction with other relevant copyright organisations; such information will guide the committee on further legislative action.

“In view of the above, you are kindly invited for an interactive session with the chairman, Committee on Justice, Youth and legislative compliance scheduled as follows,” the letter read.

Mohbad, 27, died on September 12, a few weeks after he had petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General of Police heading the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Lagos, over threats to his life by socialite Sam Larry and thugs who allegedly attacked him with guns, cutlasses and other weapons while shooting a video with Zlatan. Several videos where Naira Marley was accused of threatening Mohbad, his former signee, also surfaced after the “KPK” singer’s death.
