An attack by suspected herdsmen on an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Agagbe, Gwer-West LGA of Benue State reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least three IDPs.
The chairman of Agagbe camps, Terna Jacob, confirmed the incident, explaining that it occurred on Monday afternoon when the victims went fishing at a stream in the neighboring Gbange/Tomgov Council Ward. They were ambushed and killed during the fishing expedition.
Jacob recounted, “Yesterday morning, one Iorhemba Cletus, 37, of Block 2 Room 2 of IDP camp Agagbe, left for Gbange/Tomgov Council Ward together with two others to fish so as to sell and get food and other necessities for their families.”
He added, “But the armed Fulani herders ambushed and killed them; their bodies were later found and buried.”
The identities of the other two victims were provided as Akaa Clifford, 50, and Igbahemba Abua, 55.
Akaa Clifford was known for his fishing activities, using the proceeds to provide food and cover his sick wife’s medical bills.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, was contacted for comment, but she stated that she had not received the report at that time.
