Manchester City turned up the heat in the second half to secure a 3-1 win against Young Boys in Switzerland, maintaining their perfect record in Group G for the 2023/24 Champions League season.
The opening goal occurred in the 48th minute, initiated by a corner kick. Jack Grealish provided the ball to Rodri inside the box, who lofted it to the six-yard line, where Ruben Dias’s header struck the crossbar. Manuel Akanji reacted quickest, bundling the ball into the empty net.
However, the lead was short-lived, as Chiekh Niasse released Meschack Elia behind the defense. Elia calmly chipped the ball over Ederson to level the game just five minutes later.
Boosted by the passionate Swiss crowd, Young Boys gained confidence, but Manchester City retook control of the match 13 minutes later. Rodri was fouled by Mohamed Camara in the box after a skillful play by Grealish, resulting in a penalty. Haaland converted the penalty, securing his first Champions League goal of the season with a well-placed shot to the right-middle of the goal.
Haaland completed the victory with a sublime effort after receiving a sharp pass from Rodri just inside the penalty area. Shifting from his preferred left foot to his right, he curled a high shot into the top corner, leaving Anthony Racioppi with no chance to make a save.
Potent second-half overshadows a timid first
The opening half was far from a classic, with Manchester City controlling the tempo and possession (75%) but creating 0.12 expected goals (xG) per shot and 1.26 xG total indicating their lack of clear-cut chances.
But they took over in the second-half, taking 14 shots (50% on target) for an xG of 2.59 (0.25 per shot). They created four big chances and maintained a passing accuracy of 94%, showing the potency that allowed them to claim their first ever Champions League trophy earlier this year in May.
City have now won all of their games and lead RB Leipzig by three points. They’ve scored nine and conceded three. Their next test is against Young Boys, again, at the Etihad Stadium on November 7.
