DSS releases Bawa after over 100 days in detention

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been released by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Bello Matawalle, a former Zamfara State governor and state minister of defense, had accused Bawa of expecting a $2 million bribe from him; Bawa refuted the accusation.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa in June, and he has been detained ever since.

Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said Bawa was suspended as a result of weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

A video appeared to show Bawa being greeted by his spouses and kids upon his release, however it was not immediately clear when he was actually freed.
Top former and current government officials pleaded with the President to instruct DSS to release Bawa, according to sources acquainted with the development who spoke to Daily Trust.
“Yes, he was released today following a lot of pressure from influential people in the community,” one of the security sources, who asked to remain anonymous, stated.
He was reportedly released when the secret police finished their inquiries about him, according to a different source.

It can be recalled that Bawa’s house and office in the nation’s capital were earlier ransacked by the operatives of DSS after which he also celebrated his last Eid-el-kabir in the secret police net.
