The Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Ambassador Ibrahim Mohammed Sabo, revealed that the agency successfully preserved 4,880 lives and safeguarded property valued at N99.3 million in response to various disasters within the territory this year.
During a media briefing held at the FEMA Conference Hall in Abuja on Tuesday, Sabo stated, “The agency was responsible for saving 1,842 lives in fire incidents, 174 lives in building collapses, and 2,864 lives in flood-related incidents.”
He mentioned that, unfortunately, eight lives were lost throughout the year due to building collapses and flooding.
In addition to protecting lives, Sabo noted that the agency was able to prevent approximately N99.3 million worth of property damage caused by fire outbreaks.
Sabo emphasized that many of the lives lost in flooding could have been prevented, as flood-prone areas have barricades and warning signs in place.
Furthermore, Sabo highlighted that the FCT Minister had established a committee to proactively prevent fire incidents. He also made it clear that individuals found responsible for any disaster would face legal charges.
