The Osun State branch of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has urged organized labor to request the state government to fulfill its obligations as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it entered into with the Federal Government.
This call was conveyed in a letter authored by Emmanuel Olowu, the Chairman of Osun CDHR, and addressed to the leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) on Monday.
As a reminder, on October 2, 2023, the organized labor sector formally agreed to an MoU with the Federal Government, a key component of which pertains to the execution of the ₦35,000 wage increase for all Federal Civil Servants.
In their correspondence, Osun CDHR emphasized that this appeal is necessary to expedite the required procedures and to ensure the implementation of the wage increase, which is intended to alleviate the hardships resulting from the removal of subsidies.
“We write to inspire you to demand from the Osun State Government, the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on the 2nd Day Of October 2023, part of which is the implementation of the Thirty-Five Thousand Naira (₦35,000) Wage Award by the Federal Government to all Federal Civil Service workers.
“It should be noted that some chapters of your union in other states have approached their state Governors while Osun state has not been seen to be taking the step forward.
“We therefore charge the leadership of the union to engage the state Government on the wage award implementation and press forward the struggles for a better Nigeria,” it stated.
