Manchester City reclaimed the Premier League’s top spot with a 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday, putting an end to Liverpool’s brief tenure at the summit following their victory in the Merseyside derby.
City, who had faced consecutive league losses, showcased their dominance in the first half at the Etihad Stadium. Alvarez opened the scoring in the seventh minute, thanks to Jeremy Doku’s assist as he crossed the ball to Alvarez, who slotted home his seventh goal of the season from 12 yards.
Erling Haaland ended his recent goal drought, extending City’s lead 12 minutes later with a powerful left-footed strike from just outside the area.
But it was a different story after the break and Brighton pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.
Moments after Alvarez failed with an attempt to catch Jason Steele off his line, the ball was quickly sent upfield and, after Kaoru Mitoma’s attempted pass was blocked, Ansu Fati tucked home.
City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off in the closing minutes but they held on to win despite late pressure.
