Nottingham Forest coach Chris Wood believes that Taiwo Awoniyi should be the club’s first-choice striker.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest last summer for €20.5 million after impressing during his two-year stint at Union Berlin. Although he had a good start, scoring on his debut, he struggled with injuries and suffered a lull in form during the season. However, Awoniyi’s performances in the last five games of the season helped Nottingham Forest avoid relegation and cemented his position as the team’s number-one striker.
Forest signed Chris Wood from Burnley in the summer, but it was always clear that Awoniyi was ahead in the pecking order. Wood has started only one game this season, while Awoniyi has scored in Forest’s first three games. Wood has a good relationship with Awoniyi and believes that he deserves to be the first choice because of his recent performances.
Although Awoniyi is currently injured, once he recovers, he is likely to be back in the starting eleven. Steve Cooper, the Forest manager, has reiterated his belief in Awoniyi, and Wood will continue to work hard to get back into the team.
