"Eagles Can Secure Victory in 2024 AFCON," Believes Omeruo

Kenneth Omeruo, the stand-in captain of the Super Eagles, exudes unwavering confidence in the team’s capabilities as they embark on their quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship. In an exclusive report by IWITNESSLIVE Sports Extra, Omeruo’s belief in the Super Eagles is palpable, and he is determined to lead the team to victory.

The Super Eagles have a rich history in the AFCON, having clinched the coveted title three times in the past. Their triumphs came in the 1980 edition, which they won on home soil, and then in the 1994 and 2013 editions held in Tunisia and South Africa, respectively. Omeruo is eager to add another chapter to this illustrious history.

The 34th edition of the AFCON is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024. Ivory Coast has the honor of hosting the tournament, with matches set to be held across five different cities. Omeruo and his teammates are gearing up for this prestigious event with a single-minded focus on victory.

During the draw ceremony held in Abidjan on a vibrant Thursday, the Super Eagles were placed in Group A. They will face the challenge of competing against hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. The colorful ceremony marked the beginning of a journey filled with hopes, dreams, and the unwavering belief that the Super Eagles can once again emerge as champions of the African continent.

Speaking to the NFF media, Omeruo said he believed that with the quality in the team, the Eagles could go on to win the title again, thus adopting the catch-phrase ‘Let’s Do It Again’ as their battlecry towards winning a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in early next year.

“I think the group we find ourselves matters because in football you ought to find yourself in an easy group so you come out top and from there you can find your way. But like I said if we have the winning mentality it doesn’t matter what team we face and I am excited looking forward to knowing our opponents.

“I do believe we have the quality to win the AFCON, we have to take every game step by step and create the winning mentality the coach talked about. The coach has brought top players into the squad and I know some of them, I have played against Fisayo (Dele-Bashiru) in Turkey and I can say the players are top ones.”

The Eagles last won Africa’s football showpiece event 10 years ago and in a statement released by the Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday, the players said they were prepared to win the AFCON title again in Ivory Coast.
