Brazil, currently presiding over the UN Security Council’s rotating presidency, has summoned a council meeting to address the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, as confirmed by its foreign affairs ministry on Wednesday. The meeting has been scheduled for Friday.
The Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mauro Vieira, has cut short an Asia trip to attend this gathering at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The meeting will focus on the situation in the Gaza Strip.
It is noteworthy that Brazil had previously convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the Sunday following the surprise Hamas attack on Israel.

The Israeli military operation, characterized as the most devastating in the nation’s history, has resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 individuals in the Gaza Strip, the majority of whom are civilians, according to Israeli forces. In response to Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas in this densely populated enclave, the death toll has surged to 1,200, which includes a significant civilian casualty count, as reported by Palestinian authorities.
The conflict has caused more than 338,000 individuals in the Gaza Strip to be displaced, as indicated by the United Nations.
At Sunday’s Security Council meeting, members were divided over policy concerning Israel and the Palestinians.
Earlier on Wednesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for urgent international action to protect both Palestinian and Israeli civilians, especially children.
“Children must never be held hostage, anywhere in the world,” Lula wrote on social media platform X.
“Hamas needs to free the Israeli children who were kidnapped from their families. Israel needs to stop its bombing so Palestinian children and their mothers can leave the Gaza Strip via the Egyptian border.
“There needs to be a minimum of humanity in the insanity of war,” he said
