On Thursday, the Ogun State Assembly passed a resolution instructing the State Government to lift the ban that had previously been imposed on all union activities of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The passage of this resolution was prompted by a motion put forth by Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Minority Leader Adeleye Lukman, and endorsed by the entire House through a unanimous voice vote.
The NURTW had been banned from operating in the state for approximately four years due to a leadership crisis.
The motion’s passage followed the contributions of Oludaisi Elemide, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, who recounted the crisis that had led to the union’s ban by the 9th legislature.
Elemide acknowledged that union members had since maintained peace.
In response, Speaker of the Assembly Hon Olakunle Oluomo emphasized that lifting the ban has become necessary due to the peaceful behavior of the union members and their improved understanding of the rule of law in promoting a peaceful environment and societal orderliness.
In another development, Hon Oluomo also stated on Thursday that the house had received a list of three additional commissioner nominees from State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.
Oluomo indicated that the nominees, Olatunji Odunlami, Wasiu Isiaka, and Funmi Efuwape, are scheduled to appear before the lawmakers for screening at 10 am on Monday, October 9, 2023, and are required to submit thirty copies of their curriculum vitae.
