On Wednesday, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) released the names and photos of some of the recovered victims of the boat accident that occurred on Monday morning.
According to Hussaine Ibrahim, the NSEMA spokesman, one of the recovered victims, Murna Ezekiel, was from Kebbi State, while Bilyaminu Kontagora, Dauda Alhassan Kasabu, and Iliya Kpchra Busuru were all from Niger State.
Ibrahim further disclosed that two additional bodies were retrieved from the river on Wednesday morning, and their names will be provided once their details are confirmed.
The boat accident happened as passengers were traveling from Kasabu village in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State to Yauri, Kebbi State. The incident was attributed to heavy rains and strong winds.
Ibrahim mentioned that search and rescue operations, conducted by local divers and boat owners under the agency’s supervision, have been ongoing since the incident. However, these efforts have been hampered by continuous rainfall and strong winds.
The agency identified water hyacinth and strong waves as contributing factors to the accident.
“I want to inform you that two more bodies have been recovered this morning and as soon as we get the details I will let you know,” Ibrahim told our correspondent.
