I was approached to join drug peddlers in Nigeria, abroad – Okey Bakassi

Renowned comedian Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has candidly shared his encounters with individuals both in Nigeria and abroad who approached him with offers to engage in drug-related activities.

In a sincere interview on Channels TV, Bakassi disclosed the unsettling experiences he encountered in both his home country and foreign lands. He revealed that he had been approached by individuals involved in fraudulent activities and drug trafficking, who extended invitations for him to partake in their unlawful enterprises.

Bakassi emphasized that these invitations became more frequent after he relocated to Lagos State in Nigeria. He highlighted how individuals in the entertainment industry often become targets for such offers due to their desire for fame and success.

The comedian shed light on the vulnerabilities faced by many entertainers as they pursue recognition, acknowledging the financial incentives associated with drug-related activities. Nevertheless, Bakassi made it clear that he declined these offers, choosing to maintain a simple and lawful lifestyle instead.

He emphasized his determination to avoid succumbing to such temptations, fully aware of the inherent dangers and consequences of engaging in illegal activities. Bakassi expressed his aspiration to lead a life that allows him to sleep soundly at night, free from the constant fear of law enforcement agencies.

Bakassi stated: “When I came to Lagos as a young man, I was tempted by different people in so many ways. And I’m talking about fraudsters and drug dealers.

“I was approached. When you are in entertainment, you will be approached to peddle drugs. I have been approached overseas, I have been approached in Nigeria by drug dealers.

“They will just show up in your hotel and talk business. They will tell you about other people who are doing it and making money. But it is dangerous.

“For me, I want to be able to sleep well without being afraid of the police or any law enforcement agencies. So I have tried from day one to keep things simple and be happy.”

He also recalled that back in 2017, he had boldly revealed that “70 percent of Nigerian celebrities” were consumers of illicit drugs.

While acknowledging his own experimentation with drugs during his younger years, he emphasized that entertainers often resort to drug use as a means to enhance their creativity.
