In an effort to ensure the smooth operation of the rail system, the Lagos State Government initiated the demolition of all unauthorized structures and the displacement of traders along the Lagos Red Rail Line corridor.
The primary goal of this operation is to reclaim the Right of Way for the light rail infrastructure.
Notably, the Lagos State Governor recently issued a two-day ultimatum for illegal occupants along the rail track to vacate voluntarily or face eviction during an inspection tour of the rail infrastructure.
Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPP&UD), emphasized that encroachments on the Red Line Corridor would not be tolerated due to their potential to disrupt operations and endanger lives.
He assured that the state government remains fully committed to the timely completion of the project to enhance transportation in the state while prioritizing safety.
The Commissioner instructed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) enforcement team to ensure the complete removal of all unauthorized structures along the facility’s corridor.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, explained the design of the Red Rail Line as a Fast Train System with expected intervals of 10 minutes, highlighting the potential impact of any undesirable developments along the route.
Arc. Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, urged residents and traders in the affected areas to cooperate with the government to prevent potential harm by ensuring the complete evacuation of the designated areas.
“The Lagos State Government remains committed to providing efficient and safe transportation solutions for its residents. The enforcement operation along the Red Line Corridor is a clear demonstration of this commitment,” he stated.
The enforcement operation which also had in attendance key Management Staff of LASBCA commenced at Alagbado Train Station all through, Iju Ishaga, Agege, Mushin, and Yaba and ended at Ebute Metta Train Station.
